"Art of Architecture" Photography Contest

For amateur and professional photographers. 18yrs+, prizes and 2008 exhibit.

September 2 - October 14, 2007

Photography buffs of every level of expertise are invited to share their favorite architectural images this fall.  Submit images of your favorite 2007 Binational Doors Open Niagara sites - if selected, your winning photo could be posted on the official Doors Open Niagara website and exhibited at the new Burchfield-Penney Art Gallery, in Buffalo, New York during 2008. Additional prizes will be awarded in three categories plus Best of Show.

"The Art of Architecture" Photo Contest Rules & Prizes


1. The purpose of the Art of Architecture Photography Contest is to showcase the artistic beauty and distinctiveness of sites participating in Binational Doors Open Niagara, taking place October 13 and 14, 2007 throughout Erie, Niagara and Orleans Counties and the Niagara region of Southern Ontario. All submissions must have been taken at a Doors Open Niagara participating site between September 1, 2007 and October 14, 2007. A list of those sites can be found at the Doors Open Niagara website at: www.doorsopenniagara.com.

Photos will be judged in three main categories: Exterior Views, Interior Views and Architectural Elements.

2. The competition is open to U.S. and Canadian amateur and professional photographers, 18 years of age or order.

 

3. Entries may be color or black and white images, but must be submitted on a photo CD. Please do not send prints or slides. No allowances will be made for poor-quality images.


4. You must be the sole author and owner of the copyright in all photos entered. Images must not have been digitally altered in any way other than necessary burning, dodging and cropping.

5. Your full name, phone number (both day & evening), address and e-mail address must be included with each entry for the purpose of notifying you of the judges' decisions.

6. The deadline for entries is 5:00 p.m. Friday, November 2, 2007, delivered to the Binational Tourism Alliance office or postmarked on the same date.

How and Where to Submit Images:

Images are to be submitted on Photo CDs only. No e-mailed images will be accepted. Photo CDs are to be mailed or delivered to The Binational Tourism Alliance at either of the following addresses, and all envelopes clearly marked “2007 Art of Architecture Photography Contest, ATTN:  Helga Honey”.

A maximum of 5 images may be entered by each photographer.

 

Images must be a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and at least 1632 x 1224 pixels.

 

Please include the following details with your submission(s):

 

  -  a title for the photo (should include name of the site or building)

  -  where the photo was taken and when it was taken (ex. Front Door,

     Willowbank, Niagara-on-the-Lake, October 13, 2007).  Please note

     that no logos, names, emblems or signage other than the name of the

     building itself, can be visible in submissions.

  -  if you are submitting more than one image, please submit a covering 

     letter with a list of printed images, numbered and labeled by location.

A binational panel of judges who are accomplished in the field of photography will select the award winners. The judges' decision on all matters relating to the competition is final, and no correspondence will be entered into concerning the competition's judging and any individual or organization associated with this contest. Immediate families of the judges are not eligible to enter this contest.

 

Judging will take place by December 1, 2007 and winners will be notified by December 31, 2007



The identification of photo location as a Doors Open Niagara participating site will be considered to be accurate and truthful; in the event this can not be determined because of the composition of the photo, the Judging Panel reserves the right to verify that the image is of the location as stated before any prize is awarded.

Releases: Any images including recognizable people must be accompanied by a standard photographer's release form (see attached), waiving rights to the image and its future use. Individual photographers retain all copyrights to their work.


7. Your photo submission is your agreement that photos can be used on the Doors Open Niagara website or placed at any gallery or on any website or in any publication without notification with proper credit to you as the photographer. The Doors Open Niagara Steering Committee also reserves the right to reproduce any winning or submitted photo, at its own expense, for the legitimate use of promoting future Doors Open Niagara events including posters that may be sold to produce revenues for the Doors Open Niagara project. All submissions become the property of the Binational Tourism Alliance.


8. The Judging Panel reserves the right to change the contest rules without prior notification.


9.  For the exhibition, the photographer is responsible for the costs and    preparation of the following:

  -  Photographs should be 11" x 14" or full frame of the image (larger prints

     are the option of the photographer

  -  Photographs should be matted on a 16" x 20" archival matt board with

     a foam core backing; larger prints should also be matted.

  -  Each matted work must be framed and ready for gallery hanging.

  -  All photographs must be ready to hang. Each photograph must be framed

     with a rigid frame of either metal or wood. We will not accept plastic frames

     or metal clips systems.

  -  For a wooden frame, the best hardware is the "D-Ring Hanger" or "Strap

     Hanger" (see website:
     http://www.govart.com/hardware_hangers_hvy_B.html). D-Ring or Strap

     Hangers can be affixed to the frame on either side with light screws.
     They should be positioned equally on either side of the frame (approx.
     4" from the top of the frame.)  Also acceptable is eyelet screws in a solid

     frame with a wire.

  -  No colored matts or double matts.  Matts should be white or off-white. Photographers not meeting these requirements cannot have their work(s) exhibited.

10. Binational Doors Open Niagara is a project of the Binational Tourism Alliance, Inc. a non-profit, US & Canadian tourism trade organization focused on tourism and cultural development in cross border regions.
